Inside the Met Gala: Promo Spot
In my motion graphics capstone course during my graduate career, we were required to create a promo and title sequence video for a current event that was happening in the year 2019. I wanted to do a topic on something that was relevant at the time and for me, that was the MET Gala where A-list celebrities convene and wear fashion according to the theme of choice for that year.
Rationale —
Coloquially and affectionately referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” the Met Gala 2019 is a pinnacle of iconic style. It is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, that welcomes celebrity stars, young creatives, and industry paragons alike.
And the excitement doesn’t stop there — the gala also signifies the highly anticipated grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition: “Camp: Notes on Fashion” which opened this past May 9th, 2019.
For the video, I wanted to use celebrities that were in attendance for the night that I felt made great statements with their dress and designer of choice. Some of these celebrities include Cardi B, Kim Kardashian-West, Billy Porter Alexa Chung, Shawn Mendes, my own personal friend Liza Koshy, Deepika Padukone, Lady Gaga and Kendall and Kylie Jenner.
Personally, I felt the videos captured their eccentric and fun personalities that are reminiscent of the theme for that year, which was “Camp.” And no, not like camping, but camp which celebrates delightful bouts of fancy and extravagance.
I felt that the colors used in the transitions and effects were also on par with the theme and portrayed the eccentricities that go into making gowns with such extreme designs. I also paired the video with Madonna’s “Vogue,” as there’s no better song that really emphasizes to be proud of your self-expression, which goes very much hand-in-hand with the “camp” theme at this year’s MET.
Overall, this project would be a documentary that shows how celebrities prepare and glam for the MET weeks up until the show, and on the day of. It would be an inside, behind-the-scenes look at all the madness and hard work that unfolds to make the MET so grandiose.
