Good Eats: A ‘Foodie’mentary
As part of my motion graphics capstone course during my graduate career, we were asked to create an ending title sequence based on a fictional documentary we wanted to create.
This is what my brain conjured up at the time . . . I imagine I was hungry because. . . grad school.
Rationale —
For this project, I was inspired to do an ending title sequence about a food documentary because I love the colors and motion that food emits when in use by chefs, restaurants, etc, and because I love to eat.
The beginning of the sequence shows the documentary ending with flames being extinguished as if to represent the ending element a chef does once he’s finished cooking. Finished food = finished documentary. Once the flame is out, the sequence outros into the second opening title sequence if you will listing Ava DuVernay as the director of the film, and then on to me as executive producer, with Oprah as co-director, and Mario Testino as the director of photography.
We were allowed to make up our “film crew,” and so I decided to employ people in charge of production and the direction of work as a tribute to women of color since the project was done during Black History Month.
As for the inspiration behind the design and color scheme of the sequences, I wanted to use bright, colorful elements to aesthetically portray the food and draw attention to the detail of each of these ingredients that appear throughout.
For the music that accompanied the documentary, I chose “Stir Fry” by Migos because well . . . “stir fry” and because it had a food element to the song, is very upbeat and a song most young people and general music listeners are familiar with and wouldn’t be opposed to listening to for a documentary of this genre.
Finally, I chose to name the documentary “Good Eats” because quite literally the film would feature some good eats (lol) and I felt it matched the meaning and vibe of the documentary, and thus how the credits came to be.
